so two weeks ago this little girl’s older brother and sister each had trophies that had been given to them by their neighborhood soccer league and this child, whose nickname is Bug, lamented not having a trophy of her own. So I made her one. The screws are embedded in quick-setting epoxy in 3/8-inch holes in the base. (Our first grandchild is due this Summer...) Also, by dumb luck, it turned out to be her birthday today.

I never thought in a million years that another little girl would have “bug” as her nickname. My daughter is 8 and that’s all she’s been called since she was 4 months old. It’s great, cause at the playground she’s certainly the only bug answering to “hey bug" . With this said, I question the validity of the trophy, my bug wasn’t invited to the contest.

If there are only two Bugs, then it would be Better Bug, not Best Bug.

It was a ZIP code-based adjudication, or we’d have had to make two trophies.

Dude: it was so much fun to make. I spend days and weeks and months overthinking things, then going to and whipping them out.

Best is a superlative. You must compare three or more items for a superlative. Otherwise, it is a comparison between two things, and one can only be better than the other.

Oh no! A participation trophy?
Jokes aside you definitely made that kid’s day.

Yes! Words mean things!
In other news, I was triggered less than an hour ago when I noticed this on Twitter.

• Comparative adjective is used to compare a quality of two people or two things while a superlative adjective is used to compare a quality of a person or thing with everyone in their group.
I cannot find anything that definitively supports your position , though who believes the Internets anyway? In the example above, if the group consists of two elements, what then? I can think of a couple of examples in Geometry: an isosceles triangle has two congruent sides and because an equilateral triangle has (at least) two congruent sides, it’s an isosceles triangle. Likewise, every square is a rectangle, but only a few rectangles are squares. Logically, you have not made your case.
I cannot find an authoritative statement that the group must contain more than two elements before a superlative can apply.

TBH, she made my day. Kids are great: honest, not judgmental and you can be the same right back without fear.
